Some thoughts on my first TOS gathering.
Feb. 25th, 2003 09:02 pmThis is based on a letter I sent to the people responsible for the event, and is edited a little from that. I wanted to put it in my journal as a record.
Some thoughts on my first Setian gathering.
1. When there are two Setians with goatees and shaved heads ANYWHERE, it is inevitable that the younger one will be called Mini-Me.
2. I had been a little nervous about meeting such a large group of Setians, as I've never been fully comfortable with big groups of strangers. After a very short time, all that nervousness fell away. I've been walking a magickal path for about 6 or 7 years now, and I have always been dissatisfied with the competence and lack of discipline in every other magickal group I have come in contact with, most of which have been primarily pagans. There have never been any people that I would consider as role models, teachers, even comrades-in-arms(with a very few exceptions), and I've always been frustrated by that. I would go to pagan gatherings and want to talk about self-development, and all I would hear about was who was sleeping with who, some fluffy devotional garbage about the Goddess, and utter lack of interest in anything of a practical manner. It is an EXTREMELY refreshing change to be amongst people who know what their goals are, have some idea of how to achieve them, and be willing to discuss those methods and ideas with you. I have gotten more practical information and ideas about my own magickal practice out of that one day gathering than I've gotten in years within the Houston "pagan" community. I know I seem to be going off a bit, but I have to to convey how useful, fun, and INTELLIGENT I find the Temple and the people within it.
3. Setians/Satanists, as a whole, tend to look/smell better than pagans.
All in all, I felt that this gathering was a great experience, and has destroyed a lot of my misgivings about group work in general. It has removed a lot of my worry over self-motivation issues, which has been my primary fetter for a very long time. I commend the people responsible for putting on such a great event. Thank you.
