Some words of caution...
Sep. 3rd, 2004 05:37 pmIt has come to my attention that I have some friends (plural) in 12 step programs. I think it's great that they're seeking recovery from whatever problems that they've been having, and I encourage them in their efforts. I just want them to be cautious, as there are certain aspects of 12-step groups I have a philosophical issue with, particularly the idea that one is helpless to change one's own life, and must rely on a higher power. This idea seems particularly destructive to me, I would think that someone trying to recover from an addiction would want to build confidence in their ability to change their life, not destroy it. I know that AA and other groups like that can help people, but it is my belief that the only real change happens because the person wants to change, not because they put their trust in something else.
I may be flamed for this, and that's fine, but my comments are only because I am concerned about my friends. I'm not trying to necessarily tell people to quit a 12-step program, I just want them to be in it with open eyes.
