Harry Potter in the news again
Apr. 7th, 2003 01:30 amI'm on a local message board for pagans in the Houston area, and apparently some idiot Christian is in the news trying to get the Harry Potter books censored again. Some person on the board posted the same old tired, "Even if it was promoting witchcraft, witchcraft has nothing to do with Satanism or the Devil, blah, blah," BULLSHIT. So here's my reply, and my assessment of why Harry Potter IS Satanic:
First off, I agree with you that the fundies protesting the HP books are morons. Nothing you can do about that. Idiots are always going to be up in arms about some damn thing or another, Harry Potter just seems to be the most current fad. What I'm tired of is pagans having the same attitudes towards Satanists as Christians have towards both, usually with about the same level of understanding of what the hell it's about. Before you start going off on the "Witchcraft has nothing to do with Satan" kick, you have to look at the mindset of the accusers. To these fundies, ANYTHING not Christian is Satanic. Wicca and witchcraft are included in that category, and have been for hundreds of years. Deal with it.
Furthermore, I've read the Harry Potter books, and they ARE Satanic. Satanism is all about self-reliance, being responsible for one's own morality and confidence in one's abilities. The Harry Potter books are full of these virtues. Harry and his cronies are constantly breaking the rules to get what they want, they always turn to each other before they go to the authorities, and are constantly honing their OWN magical abilities in order to become better witches and wizards. These are all EXEMPLARY examples of Satanic ideals as understood by Satanists. The fact that the books promote self-reliance and thinking for oneself is extremely Satanic, and is obviously the real reason the Christians protest. Christianity wants people to be obedient, docile sheep. It doesn't want people to be responsible, it wants them to follow God's Will. It doesn't want people who think for themselves, it wants people who do what they're told. It wants people to rely on their government, church, or community instead of doing things on their own. The Harry Potter books and the characters in them are in direct opposition to those values, so I say they are indeed Satanic, and that it's great that they are.
