I am putting together a presentation for this weekend of modern heathen drinking traditions, Sumbel/Symbel in particular. I am planning on giving a rundown of the Norse/Germanic methods and the Anglo-Saxon ones, which are somewhat different. I will probably post it here when it is done, and I think I can do a fairly good job of it, but if anyone wants to point out some particularly good articles on the subject, feel free. Even if I don't use them in the presentation itself I plan on having a list of resources for people to investigate further if they wish. Stay tuned.

Don't drink the mead. (The mead drinking issues of my last entry are mostly from Sumbels...)

Yeah, I read that. Bummer. Well, down here in Texas, there are many screwed up things, but people make decent mead. I've never had a problem with it, in any case. The sumbel this weekend is going to be a Setian affair, and if we have mead, it will likely be commercial, so I don't think we have anything to worry about, aside from it not tasting as good as home-made.

You know 8-| maybe it is something regional... The Ohio Valley has tons of pollen, molds and everything else floating around in a very humid soup. I wonder if it's something that tends to grow in mead here. I don't have the trouble with home-brewed beer or wine, just that damn mead.

Could be. Have you tried getting some Chaucer's or another commercial mead to see if it has the same effect? I know they're not as good as home made, but that would be a good way of determining if it is a regional thing. One of these days I'll get around to trying my hand at making some mead, I just don't have the time or space right now.

I don't have any trouble with commercial meads. I don't have trouble every time I drink home-brew. I just have trouble a good number of the times I drink the home-brew.
