Where's Jimmy Stewart when you need him?

I just watched Mr. Smith Goes to Washington for the very first time. Great movie. My only complaint was that Harvey wasn't in it. I figured I'd compare it to what's going on in Congress today, because I like to torture myself. So, let's see. We have:

A war in Iraq.
Inadequate disaster prep for this hurricane season.
Gas prices above $3 per gallon.
Osama's still on the loose.
Civil liberties eroding all over the place.
Education costs skyrocketing.
Healthcare costs doing the same.
Global Warming.
No sight of a good alternative to oil.
Possible disease pandemics like bird flu.

With all that shite going on, I bet Congress is busy as fuck dealing with real issues. What've you got for me Congress? Going to get down to some meaty debate on how to deal with some of the real crises facing the US?

Oh. You're going to debate gay marriage. And right after dealing so decisively with the immigration issue, too. Good to know so much important work is going on in Washington.

Sorry Senator Smith, I guess that dam will be built after all.

Masque, didn't you hear, heterosexual marriage is under attack, gays are the new terrorist.

Not only are they creating gay babies, but they are also responsible for the continually rising divorce rate.

I am still not real clear on exactly how homosexuals are responsible for those two things, but the Republican party assures me they are...so it must be true.

And see if we continue to let gays marry then they will just create more gay babies and eventually we will apparently be asexual and then people will be able to have babies without marriage.

Ok my head hurts...I am going back to bed.
